Saw this announcement for Pixar's new film. Looks to be based in medieval Scotland. I love the forests, moss, mist, grass and trees. The lead character looks great too. A level of quality to try and aim for...

Multimedia Thesis Preperations
Thought I'd start over since I haven't been here for over a year. Been busy with school and life. The big project looming on the horizon is an idea for my thesis, which I am starting to hash out now because of the time and effort I foresee being involved in its completion.
I plan on creating an animated film running no longer than ten minutes though we'll see if that is truly the case as I start building it. It will be based on a short story I wrote a little over a year ago, which spans about 20 pages. It will take place in two environments and involve three characters. I say two environments but one of them is a forest, which will be three to four environments in itself probably. Below is a grass test in Autodesk Maya 2011

The technology I will be implementing to create this piece includes the following: Autodesk Maya, Pixologic ZBrush, Autodesk 3ds Max, FaceRobot, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Soundbooth, Adobe AfterEffects, Pixar Renderman and Final Cut Pro. I am currently researching other plugins for creating forests and may have to purchase a digital model here or there if I get stuck but I hope not too. The past few months I have been shooting hundreds of digital photos to use as both reference material and textures for 3D models. Shingles, concrete, wood floors, stucco, leaves, dirt, skies, grass, trees, fountains, moss, brick, fabrics, lattice work etc. Here is an early test result of this research, rendered in Autodesk Maya.

I am learning as I go, which is exciting and scary. This idea has not been green lit by Harvard yet. I want to have all the pieces in place before I begin and be well on my way because once it is a go I have 9 months to complete it. I think it will take far more than that. In my tests, 30 seconds of 720 HD video has taken 1.5 to 2 hours to render. That's just rendering mind you and does not take into account building the models, animation, lip synching, animating, lighting, texturing etc. For a ten minute movie at that rate I am looking at about two full days of just processing the movie into a viewable file. And that's getting all the pieces locked and the camera angles perfected with no changes resulting in finished shots. Should be an adventure. Stay tuned....
